Hey Everybody! I just joined the forums, and was recommended to this site by someone at Bimmerforums.com I had a quick question. My car is in need of an alignment and I was wondering if it's worth paying the extra $$ to get the alignment done at a BMW Dealership or a certified BMW mechanic shop versus an ordinary alignment place. I've heard BMW's have special procedures for alignments, and dealerships and BMW mechanic shops are the only one's that have the right equipment to do it properly. I know they also weigh the car down, as compared to normal alignment shops which do not, to simulate a real-world scenario. Anyone have any experience or input on this? Is it worth taking my car to the dealership or certified technician rather than to a normal shop? Thanks For reference, to get a 4-wheel alignment, my closest dealership would charge $200, I found a certified BMW shop that charges $180, an ordinary alignment shop that charges $100, and I know an independent shop that would charge $60. (I live in the DFW area)

Remember you get what you pay for with alignments. Not knowing what you are driving I can't say what you actually need but older BMW's mid 80s and back only have toe adjustment on the front, nothing else. As we move forward in time, each generation get more complex as alignments(and everything else) goes. A $60 alignment is for old pickups, $100 alignments are for newer pickups. You should expect to pay at least $200 for a professional BMW alignement. First question you should ask is do they have the ability to reset the steering angle sensor after they are done. If not...you know you are at the wrong place.
