The above lights lit but not ABS. car drives fine. Speedo works.Owners manual says to check brake fluid level-it is fine. could it be wheel speed sensor? passenger front? Do scanners at auto parts store give useful, info in these cases? Thanks

In my case I needed an alignment ($90).

I just put in a threat on E-39 DSC failure. Check your ABS wheel sensors. This should come up on the BMW CPU reader. my independent found this on his CPU reader. Probably one but not the one that runs the speedometer which on the E-39 is the left rear.

Very much doubt that an auto parts store code reader will see this. It will see a red ABS light and other things that will fail you at inspection, but not the second / third level data that says why the failure. Otherwise, why would the independents use the BMW reader software. I know that German European Imports on K has a reader, and I understand there is a guy under Mobile BMW who has a reader in his truck and will meet you at your home. GEI solved my problem AND allow me to bring parts to them.

On a 2001 your auto parts stores can only read Engine and Transmission codes. ABS/DSC will need to be someone that has more complex scanning equipment.

LISTEN TO THE GUY ABOUT ALIGNMENT. THAT'S WHAT IT NEEDS (UNLESS YOUR STEERING WHEEL POSITION SENSOR MALFUNCTIONED, WHICH IS MUCH LESS LIKELY THE CASE)
